4 Time FIA European Top Fuel Drag Racing CHampion

Who is Andy Carter?

Andy Carter is a life-long, hardcore racer. From the age of 11 he crewed for a successful Banger Racing driver, learning the ropes at different oval tracks all over the country. He started driving race cars at 16 in the highly competitive world of Spedeworth National Hot Rods. In 1982 he switched to the street classes of Drag Racing and so began the journey that would see him reach the pinnacle of this incredible motorsport with 4 FIA Top Fuel Drag Racing titles to his name.

Andy first tested a Top Fuel Dragster in 1994 at the end-of-season Flame and Thunder event, held at Santa Pod Raceway. He was ready to contest the Eurpoean Top Fuel Challenge the following year where he finished 8th. In 1996, Top Fuel in Europe became a recognised FIA class. Carter improved slightly finishing 7th come the end of the season. The progression continued in 1997 where he finished 6th before deciding to relocate the operation to Dallas, Texas to compete in the major league - the NHRA Drag Racing Series.

Following a very challenging two years in America, Carter returned to the UK and in 2000, he found himself back racing in a match race at Shakespeare County Raceway which he won 3-0 and set a new track record - 5.21 seconds at 276MPH. This experience was enough to banish the US memories and he was ready to contest the FIA European series once more.
His return in 2001 was a triumph that rewarded him with his first FIA European Top Fuel Championship.
He was unable to repeat the success in 2002 but did run 4.89 at 303MPH alongside his arch Rival, Barry Sheavills who ran a 4.97 at 304MPH, the first 4 second/300MPH runs outside of America.
Until now Carter was self-funded but in 2003 his first major sponsor arrived in the form of First National Telecom. A mixed season followed including a crash at 280MPH that he walked away from unharmed. In 2004, Go Talk were the new partners and his second FIA Championship was secured.
DIY giants B&Q teamed up with Carter Motorsport in 2005 - 06 seasons with on-track results mixed. Something new and special was needed to take Andy and the team forward and this came in the form of new sponsor - US oil giant, Lucas Oil. Another announcement soon followed with the news that Andy would be driving the car owned by Per and Karsten Andersen, the car that had won the 06 title with the Andersen's widely regarded as the best Crew Chiefs in Europe. No championship win came but Andy set various track ET and speed records throughout the year, proving that the potential was there.
This potentail was realised in 2008 with Carter securing his third title which he then went on the retain in 2009.
After his retirement from the sport in 2011, Carter was the highest FIA Top Fuel points scorer in history with multiple track ET and speed records to his name. He had set the 1/4 mark in Europe at an incredible 4.57 seconds at 320MPH with 4 FIA European Top Fuel Dragster titles to his name. In 2009 he released a book detailing his career titled - 'Andy Carter, King of Europe'. With his record, it's difficult to argue against that title.
